An estimated 459,000 Australians are currently living with dementia and almost 1.6 million people are involved in their care.
Without a medical breakthrough, it is
predicted that almost 900,000 Australians will be living with dementia by
2050.
The Dementia Australia Research Foundation funds researchers in their quest to delay, prevent and ultimately find a cure for dementia. A disease that takes away the most precious of human qualities - memory.
As the second leading cause of death in Australia, investment in research will help minimise its impact in the future.
"I chose the Dementia Australia Research Foundation as the 2021 President's charity because my Mum passed away after suffering early-onset Alzheimers. It was a horrible journey for my family. Alzheimer's is just such an appalling disease and it affects the family of sufferers. It takes away the very thing that enables people to come to terms with a terminal illness. My passion for this was reinforced by my work on the aged care royal commission." Juliana Warner, President, Law Society of NSW
