Currently, it is estimated that more than 446,500 Australians are living with dementia. Without a significant intervention, the number of Australians living with dementia is expected to increase to more than 1 million by 2065.

Why am I doing 2500 crunches in June?
My dad.
My dad is the fittest man I know. He has represented Norfolk Island in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games. He has completed the Ironman 11 times. 11 TIMES! I don’t need to say anymore. Those that know will understand just HOW gruelling that is.
12 years ago, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. His symptoms started minor and remained minor for many years – probably due to his extreme fitness. It was only in the last 4 years where things have started changing and catching up.
Last year, the ugly disease that is Dementia (Parkinson’s Disease Dementia) caught up to him. While it hasn’t physically slowed him down (he’d run a marathon if we let him), it’s affected his memory and mind. I’ll be blunt, it’s been bloody horrible and tough and depressing.
Because of this, I have decided to do 2,500 crunches in June to raise funds for Dementia Australia. The only thing that crunches in my body, is the cartilage in my knee joints. It’ll be tough, but for my dad – I’d even attempt an Ironman. This is the least I can do.
Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia overall. 1 in 12 Australians over 65 live with Dementia, and it’s increasing. By 2065, Dementia Australia is estimating that number will shift to 1 million. We need to act on this now.
