Join Salon HER in raising awareness and funds for Dementia Australia
My relationship with my Nan was one that was not from a conventional start. My Nan was asked if she could care for me at the age of four as the only other option was to me to be handed over for adoption. In the same day my Nan received that phone call she also resigned from 3 jobs, drove from Sydney to Coffs Harbour and drove us home to Sydney. Me, her and my little backpack and our new life together.
What came next was a love story like you would never
imagine. We became each other’s world through all the layers life exposed to us
and what evolved was a soul connection that could never be broken.
My Nanny June developed signs of dementia in her late 70’s and now at 84 is
very much living with her disease to its full capacity. There are fragments of
her that still exist and her legacy remains as the vibrant, gregarious, loving,
selfless woman we all know her to be.
As a part of Salon HER’s give back initiative this year I wanted to honour the
lives of every person and their families struggling with this slowly
destructive disease. Dementia is my Nan’s disease, it is not who she is.
I chose Dementia Australia as they are the leading organisation for support.
With more than 55 million people worldwide living with dementia, it is a
condition that touches so many families, often quietly and without enough
conversation.
All of the money donated in our annual fundraiser will support the work of
Dementia Australia to provide vital services for people living with dementia,
their families and their carers. These services include counselling, support
groups, education and training, so that families like mine can protect the
dignity, comfort and care of those they love so dearly living with dementia.
