I'm running 54km up and down a mountain to raise funds for people with Dementia!
Dementia, sucks, plain and simple.
I remember when my Dad first told me about his diagnosis. He'd said that his specialist had diagnosed him with early stage Alzheimers.
I could see in his eyes that it was hitting him hard. Regardless he raised his gaze and said "One day at a time".
So, that's what we did. We took it one day at a time.
Over the next five years, I've experienced how scary, hard and absolutely brutal the disease is on family, friends and everyone it touches. It's hard to see someone so bright, happy, social and full of life...change.
Dad passed away on the 20th of May, 2024.
I'm not going to lie, it damn sucks, but as I look back I keep thinking about his lawn.
If you happened to come to our house on a Saturday afternoon. You would have been met by an impeccable front lawn. That’s because Dad had made me rake the leaves…starting from 7am sharp.
One Saturday when I was raking the leaves as usual, I’d had enough.
It was windy and the leaves just kept falling from the stupid tree.
I raked.
More leaves.
I raked.
More leaves.
Frustrated, I threw the rake and stormed off. Dad eventually came and found me.
“Nico, you don’t stop just because it's a little bit windy. You stop raking when you’re done.”
So...I'm not done with this disease. I'm doing something about it. I’m going to be running 54km up and down a mountain to raise money for Dimentia Australia.
Look, I know jack squat about how to help with this disease. But the guys at DA do. So all funds raised will support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services for people living with dementia, their families and carers. These services include counselling, support groups, education and training.
I’ll keep fighting, one day at a time, until I’m done!
