All funds raised will support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services for people living with dementia, their families and carers. These services include counselling, support groups, education and training.

Buzz Cut!

Monday 29th Dec
On the 27th of December, I took myself to the hairdresser, and the very enthusiastic hairdresser (who had shaved her head for a sarcoma charity back in 2019) plaited the lengths that were long enough to donate, chopped them off, and then buzzed the rest of my hair. It was kind of exhilirating and I'm not sure that's quite worn off yet!

It's only been 2 days, but I'm loving it! And I'm so glad that so many people were able to help me fundraise for this cause. Thank you to friends and family for your wonderful words of encouragement and excitement, for sharing your own stories of knowing or caring for family or friends with dementia, and for donating so generously. 

The buzz has been a bit of a conversation starter already! And has been slightly more exciting than, "How's work going, Maddi?" -- more like, "Wait, so why'd you shave your hair again?". Even the guy who runs the go-to pizza place (whose name I don't actually know, whose restaurant I walk past every day on my way to and from the station) was like, "Hey, weird question, but did you used to have sort of...longer hair?" when I went in to pick up pizza yesterday evening. And then we just chatted about dementia, and he started telling me about a few charities that are close to his heart which help to support people and fund research for other chronic illnesses. So far this haircut is winning on so many levels: raising money for dementia, helping to make a new wig for someone, the joy and excitement that comes from other people's joy and excitement for the cause, the fun of having a new hairstyle, the fact that it gives me something a bit different to talk about (even with people who are strangers, like the hairdresser and the pizza guy), and that it gives people the opportunity to talk about their own stories, of family members and friends they may have lost to dementia or who may be currently struggling with it. 

Anyways, this was quite a long post thing, but I'm just so glad I could fundraise in this way, and have the opportunity to talk to people about a cause that's super important to me. :)
