I'm raising funds for people with dementia!
Dementia is something that has touched my family in a very personal way. My grandpa had dementia, and watching someone I love experience the effects of the disease made me realise just how much dementia can impact not only the person living with it, but their entire family.
When you love someone with dementia, you can see how much changes. Memories, independence and parts of who someone once was can slowly become harder to hold onto. It is incredibly difficult for families to experience, and it made me realise that dementia is something that deserves far more awareness, understanding and support.
For my Year 9 Personal Best project, I decided that I didn’t just want to complete a project for a grade. I wanted to use the opportunity to do something that actually meant something to me. That is why I am organising “A Fight to Remember”, a community fundraising event supporting Dementia Australia.
My goal is to bring people together for an afternoon of trivia, fun, raffles and fundraising, while raising as much money and awareness as I can. Every donation and every person who gets involved will help contribute to a cause that is incredibly close to my heart.
I know I can’t change what happened to my grandpa, but I can choose to turn something that was incredibly difficult for my family into something positive. I hope this fundraiser can help other families feel supported, raise awareness about dementia, and contribute to a future where people living with dementia and their loved ones have the support they need.
