their families and carers. These services include counselling, support groups,
education and training.
Australian statistics
- Dementia
is the second leading cause of death of all
Australians and provisional data is showing that dementia will likely
soon be the leading cause of death.
- Dementia
is the leading cause of death for women.
- In
2023, it is estimated there are more than 400,000 Australians
living with dementia. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of
people with dementia is expected to increase to more than 800,000 by 2058.
- In
2023, it is estimated there are more than 28,650 people with
younger onset dementia, expected to rise to more than 42,400
people by 2058. This can include people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
- In
2023, it is estimated that more than 1.5 million people
in Australia are involved in the care of someone living with dementia.
- 2 in 3 people
with dementia are thought to be living in the community.
- More
than two-thirds (68.1%) of aged care residents have moderate to
severe cognitive impairment.
