Support Dementia Australia

By Anthony Oh Join Me

I'm raising funds for people with dementia!

My father, Peter, has been diagnosed with Dementia in 2021. It has been challenging since the diagnosis in the last 3 years for me and the entire family. His health and people surrounding have been impacted by Peter's deteriorating brain function and his health. He is now settled at a nursing home, while relying on medications and being looked after by carers.

During past 3 years, I have received councelling and advice from Dementia Australia, on what I could do to navigate administration, family relationships, and receive feedback on whether I'm doing the right thing. I've received heart-felt support from Dementia Australia. Without their help, I wouldn't know what I was doing, who to talk to and whether I've made a best decision.

Through this fundraise, I would like to help them and make you aware these wonderful people exist who are willing to help.

Please make a donation to support my efforts and help those with dementia. All funds raised will support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services for people living with dementia, their families and carers. These services include counselling, support groups, education and training.

Thank you for your support.

Friday 12th May
Just a reminder, please meet us at the Denman Prospects Shops North carpark (near the playground). Grab yourselves coffee (from Morning Dew cafe), mingle, chat and see interesting cars and bikes.  We'll drive/ride to Cotter Dam, leaving at around 9:30, followed by going to the Tidbinbilla Tracking Station.

Always drive safely, be courteous to other road users, including cyclists.

I've been notified that Alfa Romeo club is meeting at the same time, same location, and we maybe driving together to the Cotter Dam.  They are then off to Bungendore.

My next appointment with Dementia Australia is on Monday 15th May, which I'll share the fundraising outcome. Thank you for those who donated so far (Karen, Dale, Doug, Simon, David, Steve, Glenn & anonymous, thank you!!). Any small amount or sharing the awareness of Dementia and the organisation are welcomed.

The car-meet event will be recurring monthly and fundraising page will remain open.

So far...

Thursday 11th May
My father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2021. We have noticed memory loss few years earlier, but we simply thought it was just part of aging. My father's GP recommended to get an MRI scan, then we realised its seriousness, and started to prepare for the worst.

My father has no short-term memory, has no ability to create new memory. He will forget what happened within seconds. This has safety and social implications, and made difficult for others who provide care. I am now the sole carer, as the last person remaining in his life.

Since the diagnosis, we have arranged legal, financial and government subsidised care. It's been a long journey but everyone have been caring and helpful, especially from MyAgedCare, Lexmerca Lawyers, Calvary Hospital and MCCI.

Dementia Australia have been providing information on possible options for aged cares and advised on how I could navigate some of these administrative challenges. We set goals before the next session and provided feedback. Their counselling service was also helpful where I would share some of the emotionally complex issues.

The challenge is on-going as his health deteriorates. It really highlights how kind everyone surrounding us and how lucky we are to have supportive system.  I am very grateful. Thank you.
