Cycling around Britain fundraising for Dementia Australia.

By Andrew Wheeler

I'm raising funds for people with dementia!

I'll be commencing my fundraiser on 23 April at the London Stadium, cycling around Great Britain to raise funds for Dementia Australia.

But I need your help! Please make a donation to support my efforts and help me reach my goal to beat dementia.

All funds raised will support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services for people living with dementia, their families and carers. These services include counselling, support groups, education and training.

Thank you for your support.

Thank you Everyone Who Donated to my Ride!

Sunday 31st May
30-5-2026
Thanks to everyone who donated to my ride. I raised nearly a $1000 more than I was aiming for. Your generosity is so very, very appreciated!
Sincerely, Andrew Wheeler.

Finished the Ride! 29-5

Sunday 31st May
Andy left Cambridge on the 27th of May and then managed to get to Harlow where his parents used to live. From there to Harlow and then onto London and the ground of West Ham United (WHU) and the London Stadium. Definitely slimmer and way fitter, Andy is now relaxing with family. Thank you Cousin Denise! Then Andy is off to Norwich and then catching up with London friends before his exodus back to Australia on. June 10th. Well done Andy.

Nearly There - May 28, 2026.

Thursday 28th May
On Tuesday May 26, Andy left Grimsby and rode to Skegness to stay the night with his cousin Paul and Trish and their son. He rode to Peterborough on Wednesday May 27 and left early to stay in Cambridge on Thursday May 28.

21-5 to 23-5 So Far, Andy is in Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve

Sunday 24th May
Andy has been busy! He was in Middlesex and less than impressed with the weather, the puncture and missing out on a trip along the coast due to another puncture. He rode to Durham and a fellow biker saved the day by helping Andy to change his tube. He arrived by train into Whitby due to not having a spare tube and the Bike Shop being closed. He rode the 40 miles on 23-5 to Bemptong Cliffs to meet his brother and sister-in-law. Sightseeing and birdwatching in the incredible weather was a pleasure on Saturday May 23. Stay tuned!

Staying Put!

Tuesday 19th May
Andy arrived to ------- on Monday May 18th and due to it pouring cats and dogs, he stayed until Wednesday May 20. Wish him luck for moving on and getting back to the UK to see friends and family.

Great Friends!

Tuesday 19th May
Andy rode to Paxton on Friday 15th May and stayed three nights with our great friends from Scotland. Thanks Louise and Frank for the hospitality, birdwatching and the sightseeing. Much appreciated!

14-5 Made it to Edinburgh

Friday 15th May
Cold and wet and a change of plans. Andy is going to leave Scotland as the weather has not got any kinder for a cyclist. A couple of 'adventures' with his bike rack shearing, being repaired and finally replaced. Hotels will only let you in after 3pm and that can mean a lot of waiting around when you are cold and wet. The journey continues.

Made it to Carlise on Wednesday May 13.

Friday 15th May
The day started out okay but the weather became increasingly cold, wet and windy. See the photos here and below.

A Quick Catchup.

Wednesday 13th May
Andy left his friends Tony and YiYi on Monday 11th May, his birthday.  It was so cold that he ate Tony's chicken sandwiches and kept riding in the freezing rain towards Carlisle.
However, Google Maps once again failed Andy and he cycled "40 miles in the freezing cold with the wind against me." He ended up with a nice fellow from Whiral, Liverpool to have a beer for his birthday.
As a late birthday present and because of bad weather, he took the train. In his words, "Got on train, terrible day rain." He got to Glasgow and took the city bus tour. Inside of course.
Scotland, life your game and get the weather organised for cycling, please!

Made it to Scotland and Staying with Friends and Eating REAL Food.

Sunday 10th May
Thanks to Tony and YiYi for their hospitality and the first vegetables since I left my Cousin Denise in Stratford, London. A healthy and delicious feast with great conversation. Thank you both so very much!

The Wonderful Things You See.

Sunday 10th May
Cycling between Kendal to Keslwick, this is what I say on May 6.

The Trip to Kelswick and sights. Thur May 7.

Friday 8th May
All the photos dated May 7 are around the area of Kelswick

Cycling from Blackpool to Kendal, The Lakes District.

Thursday 7th May
Andy had a short but challenging ride along pot holed roads and tracks to get to Kendal. He arrived safely and shared some of the beautiful countryside he saw.

Kindness Saved the Day on 5/5/26 near Blackpool.

Wednesday 6th May
Andy wrote a text to me and others': "These people were really good to me, had to buy a new [bike] pump and more inner tubes. The name of the Bike Shop in an alley in Blackpool is Apex Social. In the picture, James is putting onto his website my information. He gave me a free cake and offered me coffee".
Some context here, on Monday May 6, Andy got a puncture and his very expensive bike pump would not inflate the new inner tube. This was his first puncture and if he had of been in the countryside, he would have been in trouble. Other cyclists helped him change and pump the new inner tube so he could continue his ride from Southport to Blackpool.

My Journey so Far - Up to May 1, 2026.

Friday 1st May
This is the route that I took through the South of England and into Wales. The photos are some of the sights I saw along the way.
From London Stadium to Brighton (60 miles) and then onto Portsmouth (60 m).  From Portsmouth to Bournemouth (59m) and then onto  Wells, Somerset(50 m). From there I rode to Chepstow Castle in Wales which was a 70 mile diversion. Then Wells to Merty Tidfill (50 m) and then Buit WElls (45m). From Buit Wells I retutned to Wells and then rode onto Aberystwyth, Wales (61 m). I rode onto Colwyn Bay in the North of Wales and took a rest day on Friday May 1 and then Saturday May 2. May have mucked up? It is meant to rain Sunday May 3 - I really hope not as Saturday was a beautiful sunny day.
Stay tuned for the next instalment!

A Hearty Breakfast (without sponsorship)!

Friday 1st May
The breakfast of Champions but I should have asked the company to sponsor me due to eating a can everyday for breakfast.

$5000 AUD Achieved by Thursday April 30, 2026.

Thursday 30th Apr
Andy has finally reached the goal of $5000. He has met many people who want to donate to this brilliant cause. The friendliness of Welsh people, sharing his email and his link in Wales so that people can share his journey. How good is that! Thanks everyone however you have and continue to support the ride.

In Wales

Wednesday 29th Apr
Weather changing, people very friendly. Doing a lot of miles think I'm going up hill in wales.

Left London- Wednesday April 23, 2026.

Friday 24th Apr
Cycled the first stage down to Brighton. I think I went the long way. I did about 80 miles.

Cycle UK to raise funds for Fred Wheeler who died of dementia related illness in 2022 All funds go to Dementia Australia.

Hola Andy! We just wanted to take a moment to tell you how incredibly proud we are of what you're doing. Riding all those miles to raise funds and awareness for people living with dementia is something truly meaningful. It takes determination, generosity, and a big heart to dedicate your time and effort to a cause that affects so many families. Andrés's Granthfather and Grandmother suffered from this several years before passing away! Every mile you ride represents hope and compassion for those facing dementia and for the people who care for them. What you're doing truly matters, and it's inspiring to see your commitment. Please know that we are cheering you on every step of the way. Even on the toughest parts of the ride, remember that you have people behind you who admire what you're doing and believe in you. Keep pushing forward! we're all very proud of you.
