I'm raising funds for people with dementia!
In 2017, my dad, my hero was diagnosed with Dementia. A disease that at the start made him quite frustrated as he would forget and knew exactly what was happening. As time went one and he deteriorated, he ended up in hospital more times from falls and he level of care became higher.
Slowly his ability to look after himself and doing simple things were fading. He needed constant care from my mum, grandpa which is my dad’s dad, myself and services that were available. Near the end he had no idea what was going on. Simply giving me a kiss on the head and biggest cuddle on his last day at home saying ‘it’s going to be okay darling ‘.
He was Oblivious to it all and the complete mess everyone was around him knowing what was lying ahead. On the 2nd of December 2023 he passed away.
He was the kind of person that loved life and simply just wanted to have a good time. He was funny , had a heart of gold and when he loved you, he really loved you. Dad was the one person that always believed in me and whatever path I chose. He was the dad that would never miss out of seeing his baby girl concur a dream, and he was there for every one.
Watching him decline is a pain a memory that will never fade. Although I am forever grateful for those moments even if they were filled with silence , holding his hand in his hospital bed. Having to answer the questions from his 4yr old grandson of ‘mum, is that pa in that box ?’, ‘ If I talk to him he why doesn’t he talk back? And ‘ why will I never be able to see him again?’. Having to answer these questions to Fletcher when I didn’t even want to answer them myself. Also having to watch so many that I love go through so much pain even though I know dad would be saying ‘ Don’t cry for me I’m alright , I’m better then you know’.
So with this raffle in dad’s memory it’s for so many reasons for him and because if he was here he’d be there on the day, for all my loved ones and those around the world that have had to go through the same pain and to help Dementia Australia , even though it may be only small, find more information and cures for this disease.
So dad , this one is for you 🩷
