We're raising funds for people with dementia!
In February this year, our family lost the most loving, kind, selfless, and absolutely hilarious person in our lives – Mum to my brothers and I, and wife to my Dad, ‘wee’ Annie.
Fiercely protective of her family and proud of her homeland Scotland, Mum succumbed to the cruel disease of dementia, a battle that lasted just over 4 years. Helping Mum the best way we could through her fight meant plenty of love, support, humour and music. All the elements that made her the amazing person she was, dementia aside.
Being a wee Scot, Mum loved to sing, and one song she sang with gusto was the very catchy ‘I’m Gonna Be 500 Miles,’ which she sang in her thick Scottish accent. With this in mind, and so many other treasured memories of Mum, I would like you to join me either in person or wherever you may be, to see if we can walk a combined 500 miles in recognition and support of the research conducted by the amazing people at Dementia Australia.
The support our family was offered from them upon Mum’s diagnosis gave us such comfort to know we weren’t battling alone. September is dementia month, so on Sunday September 17th I would like to get as many people to get walking. Enjoy the fresh spring air, get out amongst nature and walk as far as you can manage. Take a friend, take the dog, or walk solo, and just for good humour, wear a splash of tartan!
So many families are touched by this cruel disease, but as Mum always said “something good always comes from something bad.” I would walk 500 miles for you, Mum, and I will be thinking of you with every step as I sing your song along the way! Would you walk 500 miles for dementia awareness?

Well done Ali for what you’re doing. My mum passed away almost a year ago with the same horrid disease. Her journey was probably almost ten years and she went into care for almost four. It is totally heartbreaking. I’ll be golfing this Sunday with my piece of tartan and feeling proud to be supporting your team!!! Go Team Annie 👍
