Reminding people that dementia is not a dirty word - plus $10'848.50 donated

Thursday 6th Oct
It was FUN and Olive (Mum) was so proud to walk beside family and friends around her hometown. She was fit enough and had the support of so many people. Here sisters did so much work towards the event are pictured here with her.

THE NUMBERS ….
Olive is 79 years old. She was diagnosed with Dementia in 2018. The first symptom appeared in 2016. Olive is otherwise fit and healthy and regularly walks 3km most days.
Olive’s Walk for Dementia Awareness involved walking 3km. Here in Baralaba, ~40 people of all ages joined in, including one local doctor, at least four nurses, an ambulance officer, family, friends, locals and even some pet dogs. (numbers of walkers were limited for road safety and also for the stress levels for both Olive and Lyn).
Seven local Rockhampton businesses, the Baralaba Hotel and Olive’s sisters donated raffle prizes, and seven people assisted with selling raffle tickets.
Hundreds of people donated their money or their time, sent warm wishes and took the opportunity to become aware of what Dementia Australia offers.
On the day, there was one support vehicle, one water station along the route, four donation boxes, two BBQ cooks, lots of open and proactive conversations about Dementia, and HEAPS OF FUN!
To date, Olive’s Walk for Dementia Awareness has raised $10,848.50.
ONCE AGAIN - THANK YOU ALL xxxxxxx
Olive, Lyn and the ever-patient Carl

After diagnoses you can still have some fun

Wednesday 27th Jul

“People told me that I was forgetting things and I didn’t realise I was,” Olive said. “The diagnosis came, the doctor gave me tablets and life goes on.”

“I want others who are diagnosed to know that if you get in early, you still have a fair chance of quality of life and it’s important to get on the front foot with your health and accept it.”

Local farmer still contributes to community although diagnosed with Alzheimer's

Wednesday 27th Jul

Olive was born in the Baralaba Hospital and has lived on farms in the Baralaba district her entire life!  She has always contributed to our community and is keen to keep this tradition by raising awareness about dementia by walking 3km at 9am on the 10th September.

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a form of Dementia in 2018 and will soon be 79 years old.

She takes medication for her dementia and keeps active and continues work where she can in the family business - she can still do a lot of jobs that keep her happy and content and which actually help.

Olive began walking to reduce her blood pressure then after Peter her husband of 55 years passed away she walked every morning.  Walking is good for the body and mind and she encourages others to do the same!
