I'm raising funds for people with dementia! 

In February 2023 we will be racing from the east to the west coast of New Zealand by running, riding and kayaking across some pretty tough terrain. Along the way I hope to raise money to support families, like mine, that have been impacted by the symptoms of dementia. All funds raised will support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services for people living with dementia, their families and carers. These services include counselling, support groups, education and training.

Nearly Half Way!

Thursday 20th Oct
Well - this photos shows what it look likes seconds before I ended up upside down in the Yarra River...as I like to say...every good paddler needs to practise a swim and self recovery every now and then! 

It's nearly the end of week 15, which means we are pretty much half way through the training program and things will start to get pretty serious from here on in. Can't slack off on training days anymore, need to kick the diet in the butt to get that under control, and focus on stretching and recovery more as the weekend sessions get bigger and more demanding! 

This first half of the training plan has gone by so quickly, race day is approaching at a rapid rate! eeeek!

Friday 29th Jul
They say it takes three weeks to build a habit and it has certainly taken the full three weeks for me to get back into the swing of daily training! The first two weeks were definitely a bit of a struggle but I am beginning to enjoy my training sessions again and this week has been full of new experiences that occasionally put me very much outside of my comfort zone. I joined a paddling squad this week and was no where near keeping up...something I can use to measure my progress with I suppose :)  I've also started strength training in the gym with a new PT which I hope will help me catch up to the others at paddle squad in no time.

We've managed to reach just over 10% of our fundraising goal so far - which is awesome! My beautiful grandmother (seen here with my dog Buddy) is my reason for choosing to fundraise for Dementia Australia.

Coast to Coast, New Zealand. The Race.

Thursday 30th Jun
The coast to coast NZ is a multisport race across New Zealand.

Start - We line up on the Beach at Kumara making sure we touch the water on the east coast to begin the day!

Stage 1a - a fresh 2.2km uphill run off the beach at Kumara 
Stage 1b - a nice undulating 55km road cycle from transition at Kumara Junction to Aickens Corner

Stage 2 - a brutal 33km mountain run over the top of Goat Pass and down into Klondyke Corner (including a 4km section to the top of the pass that takes the fastest athletes around 40 minutes). There are strict cut off times for the run that will test our physical limits!

Stage 3 - 15.5km cycle down to the Mt White turn off and a 1.3km run down to the kayak starting point

Stage 4 - 70km grade II white water kayak down the Waimakariri River, including a stunning 35ish km section through the Waimakariri Gorge. 

Stage 5 - 70km cycle, including NZ's longest straight road and although this section is flat, it is famously known for it's strong headwinds as we come into Christchurch and finish at New Brighton Beach. 

Finished! A total of 243km for the day! We wander over to the ocean to touch the water to make sure the complete coast to coast experience has been had :)   

We have completed this race 3 times previously in 2018, 2019 and 2020. However, we raced the two day event so this will be out first attempt at doing it in a single day. The cut off limits will be tight and we will be working hard to make sure we make these with a bit of time up our sleeve (hopefully!). We are heavily reliant on the assistance from our support crew during this race who selfishly move between transition to transition and help us along the way.
