I’m riding in Pedal the Map to make a difference for people living with dementia!

This November I’m challenging myself to raise funds to support people with dementia.

My contribution will help complete two laps around the world!

My Dad

Friday 25th Nov

6 years ago my Dad passed away from Dementia. He was 78. Not a day goes by when he doesn't cross my thoughts. A saying, a place, a person, a time, a type of food or an event. They all trigger memories of my Dad.

Dad was a hard worker. He worked hard and played harder. Having a good time was always easy for Dad. He was an accomplished and recognised footballer. He loved travelling, camping, but the ocean and fishing was his true love. It was here that he was his most happiest.

Dad retired at 58. He had simply had enough of work Having been blessed with grandchildren, he now decided it was time to enjoy spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He also wanted more time to fish. And fish he did! There weren't many days when he wasnt out on the water, fishing, crabbing or prawning.

His decision to retire this early was a blessing. 10 years later he was diagnosed with Dementia. Gradually, as the disease took hold of my Dad he became less and less of himself. He began to wander, lost the ability to speak and eventually my mum made the agonising, but necessary decision to place him in care. Over time his health deterioted and the sparkle in his eye began to die along with his mind and eventually his body.

Dementia is a debilitating disease that over time steals a person mind, independence and dignity.

Everytime I jump on my bike I ride for first and foremost for my Dad but also for all Dementia sufferers and their families.
