Mums Fight
Tuesday 6th Aug
My mum’s battle with frontotemporal dementia is finally over. She passed away peacefully on August 2nd at the age of 69. This cruel disease took everything from her — her memories, her voice, her spark.
Mum was everyone’s best friend. A loving wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother, caring daughter, and a natural caregiver to all who needed her. She had a way of making everyone feel safe, welcome, and deeply loved.
We started noticing little changes in her early 60s, but we didn’t understand what was happening. It wasn’t until a friend gently suggested it could be dementia that the fog started to lift. She was officially diagnosed when her grandson was just 4 months old. I held her hand tightly during that appointment, and I knew then she was further along than we realised — she'd been covering it so well.
It felt like such a cruel twist of fate. She had always dreamed of becoming a grandmother — it was supposed to be her time.
As the disease slowly shrank her world, my dad’s love only grew stronger. He visited her every single day in the nursing home, holding onto her dignity, caring for her with so much devotion. Watching him love her through that decline changed the way I understand love and commitment.
I hate this disease. I hate that it made me pray for her suffering to end.
But in the end, I’m not left with hate. I’m left with love — so much love — for the woman she was and the life she lived.
Thank you, Mum, for everything.
Rest peacefully — you deserve it.
I love you ❤️
