I'm raising funds for people with dementia!

I'm raising funds for people with dementia in particular Les Murray , my old man .

Myself and my god daughter and niece Princess Rhiannon will walk a thousand kilometres  - 1 000 000 metres - over the next 20 weeks and any donations will be appreciated by Les and us 2 walkers as well as my whole family and circle of friends and hopefully one day in the near future they can find a cure or at least a way to make the progress slower of this horrible disease that , like many medical ‘events’ are far from fair but this dementia / Alzheimer’s and also MND are pretty rubbish ways to treat people in their golden years - hopefully the cure or treatment involves lots of HJs , Jesters chips and 3 cartons of Millers chill per week - be nice if those 3 corporates chucked in some coin for the shout out 🤔😜🍻🍔🍟.

If you have a loved one that is now or does in the future suffer , remember they are the same person just their memory is not so flash and they can get confused easily , the hardest thing for me to see is the loss of confidence and decisiveness in my Dad , who had no such issues in his first 70 odd years .

You gotta be patient and you gotta look after them , which is obvious and what any decent human would do for another let alone for a parent , partner , uncle or aunt a sibling or a mate BUT it ain’t all beer and skittles and will be tough at times , so have fun with it and think -  if you are feeling a little frustrated , think how the poor bugger feels that has been standing at the fridge for 11 minutes with no idea WTF he or she is there .

He and Mum looked after me and my siblings royally and sacrificed plenty , so going for the odd stroll in return is nothing and in fact an honour as I love me old man and he has never actually said it but I am reasonably confident he feels the same about me .

Rhiannon is walking this year because when she asked Les at a Boxing Day BBQ , she thought she saw me starting to tear up ( had just peeled 3 kilos of onion but anyway ) so straight away she says “ Uncle Dean I want to and will walk with you next year , if ok with you “ , speaks volumes of how mature and bighearted this 23yo lady is , so thanks Rhiannon 🥰 .

Thursday 7th Oct
Trendsetters , light at the end of the tunnel has been sighted and Rhiannon and I will romp it in before Melbourne cup Day .
Also as well as his weekly 9 holes on a Friday with the fellas from the over something village he now goes out with a bloke / carer on a Wednesday , who likes golf and a beer , this will in my learned opinion slow the decline of his dementia and I as well as he ( and of course Mumbles gets a few hours to herself - stay away Poof ) are very grateful , this is one area where the very generous donations can help .

Thursday 9th Sep
What a fantastic spring day we were given for this years annual golf day , no handicaps other than my tee shots , Dad occasionally deciding to aim for pin 8 when playing the 6th etc , etc and Beaker Johnsons woeful putting , the end result Les by 1 stroke ahead of Beaker and myself 2 further back . Thanks Beaker J for covering green fees and a few frothies afterwards , great day and enjoyed and appreciated by Les and myself .

Some advice for anyone ' caring ' for someone with dementia , if you take them into the TAB , put your bets on and get out of there ( preferably with them tethered to yourself ) , if you watch a race ( Fangio did win and turned my $20 into $130 BTW ) but the 11 minutes that I couldn't locate the old man were not the most enjoyable 11 minutes of my life - TF we were 500 metres from his and Mum's house and he was able to walk himself home .
 

Golf annual challenge and thanks to Les’ Friday golf mates

Annual golf challenge of Beaker Johnson V Deano Murray V Les Murray is just around the corner looking for a combined score of under 150 for the 27 holes and no we aren’t playing the par 31 at Royal Embelton .

Played 9 holes with Les and Len at Maylands a few weeks ago and Peter and Ian and others and I wish to thank that group of blokes and in particular Len for getting the old man out and about and to the course for the weekly game of golf .

Wednesday 4th Aug
Thanks to the Chinese flu and some deadset crappy weather progress has been slower than expected and we would have liked BUT this perhaps gives us more time to add some more coin to cause .

So 7/8’s completed and planning a BBQ with some cold beverages when we reach our targeted distance in a few weeks time , so if you know anyone that backed a winner at Belmont , picked up a decent lotto collect , got a handy tax return or is in a position to flick some money please show them the link .

Mark spied me out the front of me work last Friday- I was flat out like usual and even though I only met him the once , at Kaths fiddieth last December , once we got to talking and the walk got mentioned he threw me 20 bucks, his dear old Mum was only a week or so earlier placed in a nursing home ( yep dementia ) and because of COVID he could not see her for the first week or so - 😢 .
So thanks mate and wish I had of found the offline donation button before taking the credit for your $20 .

Wednesday 24th Feb
I have walked 75kms already - started off walking 8ks from Muckas in Guildford to my Parents house in High Wycombe, was a 37 degree day so was thankful my sister was there to drive me back to Maureeeeeces.
My excellent wife , Cheryl has been helping by walking to get the kebabs and small grocery orders instead of driving like we both would have in the past , the 8k round trip to Fred’s Lotto shop , Dave’s TAB and Woolies on a Saturday morning are also kilometre builders , however I won’t make the mistake of buying the wife 10 litres of Masters Iced coffee again as it gets a bit heavy after the first K , almost had to leave the Sherrin behind but didn’t - 5 more potential corporate / business donations right there 😜 , more coming up in a tick , Rhiannon is up to 22 , so with the 1.5 we did at the Vines Resort together on the weekend, we are 10% to the 1 MILLION metre target , won’t even count the mini golf walk BUT Harley ( Rhiannon’s very lucky fiancée) , I will mention the scores Chez - 58 , Dean - 58 , Rhiannon - 60 and poor old Harley - 70 .
