My story
Sunday 21st MayIn November I’ll be running 66kms around the beaches to raise money for Alzheimers disease. Alzheimers is a disease that affects the brain with memory loss, confusion and other ways the mind works on a daily basis showing the cells are dying. I’ve picked this charity because my Dad was diagnosed with the disease at 66 years old. He started to notice it when he retired from work around 61 years old. Being so close to this (and now being his main form of carer/support) it’s a hard disease to watch anyone suffer from especially your Dad who has always been so independent.
The day our Nan (my Dads mum) went to heaven is the day we lost our Dad as well. So two family members to grieve for at the same time. We had no idea what we were facing but the first thing was to book him into the doctors then specialists. Then nearly a year later to the day we heard the news, we were told….. it’s what you originally thought… it’s Alzheimers. Then the specialist listed how it will play out and it was like this… it’s start with disorientation, mood and behaviour changes, problem solving, carrying out normal daily tasks, deepening confusion with time and events. Then worsening memory loss and confusion until you have difficulty speaking, walking and swallowing until ending up terminal. This disease can deteriorate at all different speeds. Unfortunately my Dads is quite aggressive and he has already lost most recent memories, can’t do things for himself and has lots of falls (this is only 2.5 years after diagnosis).
So this is why I have decided to do this. As I know it’s too late to help my Dad - I’m hoping I can raise money that can help with finding a cure that may help us or my nieces/nephews in the future and all the younger generation.

Amazing effort Crystal , so inspiring . I know the heartache you are going through ; my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s back in 1980 at the young age of 55 . He was 63 when he passed over , I was 31 and it was so heartbreaking to watch the deterioration of my dynamic dad . You are doing an amazing job
