Why I'm running 100 miles

On the 27th November I’m running the Kosci100Miler at Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko: 160km through the Snowy Mountains with over 5000m of elevation. It’s by far the toughest race I’ve signed up for, and I’m using it to raise money for Dementia Australia.

In July my grandad died from dementia. Watching what it did to him showed me how much support people need, both the person living with it and everyone caring for them.

What Dementia Australia does

Dementia Australia is the national charity for people of all ages living with dementia, and for their families and carers. They run support programs for people who have just been diagnosed, carer support groups, and education sessions to help families manage day-to-day changes. They also advocate for better dementia care across Australia.

Where your money goes

Donations help keep these support services running. Dementia Australia also has a research arm, the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, which funds research into diagnosing, treating, preventing and ultimately curing dementia. It is the largest non-government funder of dementia research in Australia and backs new and early-career researchers. In March this year, it funded 23 new projects worth $4.5 million.

Why it matters

In 2023, an estimated 411,100 Australians were living with dementia, and that number is projected to pass one million by 2065. Almost everyone will know someone affected by it at some point.
